The 2022 Chatathon Event is supporting four amazing charities who all fund vital dementia research – the money you donate will be split equally between them. Below you will find a little more information about each of them, and the work they do:
Alzheimer’s Research UK – Our vision is a world where people are free from the fear, harm and heartbreak of dementia. Without effective treatments, one in three children born today will die with dementia. Today, there are no dementia survivors but research can change this.
With your support, we’re working across four key areas of action.
- Understand the diseases that cause dementia.
- Diagnose people earlier and more accurately.
- Reduce risk, backed by the latest evidence.
- Treat dementia effectively.
Through these important strands of work, we’re bringing about breakthroughs that will change lives.
Alzheimer’s Society – Alzheimer’s Society is here for everyone affected by dementia. By 2025, 1 million people will be living with the condition in the UK, and many millions more carers, partners, families and friends are affected. Lack of treatments and postcode lottery for care means that people with dementia and their families aren’t getting the support they need, when they need it. Our supporters ensure that people living with dementia today have the support they deserve, that their rights are protected and enhanced by campaigning.
How we provide help – Dementia is a complex condition, and there’s no one-size fits all solution. Flexible support services and a multi-faceted approach is key to improving lives. Dementia Advisers have an extraordinary depth and breadth of knowledge. Combined with their dedication and compassion, they are unstoppable when it comes to providing personalised solutions that make a real difference. Our supporters are helping to prioritise this critical area of dementia research that will pave the way to better treatments and care.
Race Against Dementia – “Working faster and smarter, together we can beat dementia”. Race Against Dementia raises and allocates funds to accelerate global research and development in the race to find a prevention or treatment for dementia. Our vision is a breakthrough in the prevention or treatment of dementia with the greatest of urgency.
We do this through our 4 key principles:
- New talent – Identifying and financially backing the most talented early-career researchers.
- Innovation – We provide catalyst funding, enabling researchers to pursue innovative ideas at the highest level, that might not get funded by the mainstream.
- Speed – We aim to instil a ‘Formula 1 attitude’ in attention to detail and urgency, to accelerate the pace of solutions development.
- Global – We form strong alliances with research centres of excellence on a global basis.
The Lewy Body Society – The Lewy Body Society, established in June 2006 in the UK, is the only charity in Europe exclusively concerned with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). The charity’s mission is to raise awareness of DLB for the general public and educate those in the medical profession and decision making positions about all aspects of the disease and to support research into the disease. We have produced a series of vodcasts and a DVD about DLB.
DLB, is the second most frequent cause of age-related neurodegenerative dementia. At least 5 percent of people aged 85 and older are thought to live with this little known but not uncommon and devastating disease. In the UK approximately 100,000 are thought to have DLB.
